I’m the founder of Ageingup, and I’m moving in!
I love blogging, but I’m bleeding money paying for all the expenses that come with blogging. Now that I’m retired from my full-time job, I want to use my blog to build a sustainable little side-hustle.
Nothing crazy! Just enough to help top up my pension.
1. Why Substack?
I don’t want to give up blogging. It’s what I DO. I do, however, want to ditch the hundreds of dollars I spend on good hosting (Big Scoots are amazing), keyword research tools (hats off to RankIQ), Kit.com (formerly Convertkit for email newsletters), and so on.
Substack is a platform where I can answer my readers’ questions on aging, offer informative blog posts, and get to the heart of the story without requiring you to wade through thousands of words first.
I’m really excited about the prospect. It seems like a fresh, better way to provide a thoughtful blog that is easily digestible.
I also want to hide from AI as long as possible
People can’t find my blog posts anymore because they’re consuming the first thing that pops up in searches now: ChatGPT.
No shame for that, I’ve done it myself. But I suspect it’s going to change the landscape of blogging. And, you know, maybe it SHOULD.
I also want to hide from Google’s Algorithm Updates
Google is mean to the little people. I’m just a retired 57-year-old trying to make just enough money to top up my pension to pay the rent.
That’s it!
Not trying to be rich. Just trying to get by.
I also love writing, and when Google cuts my blog off at the knees because of some random update, my blog (ageingup.com) tumbles back to the bottom of the pile.
It’s just not worth it anymore.
Where Are My Peeps?
This is where I hope to find my people. I want to talk to you, provide useful information, insights, a little humor, and maybe the occasional swear word. Hey, I’m from Nova Scotia, and we’re a little “salty” over here.
Ultimately, I want to find my community, and I think SubStack could just be the place to do that. I don’t just want to write AT YOU. I want to write to encourage conversation and feedback.
Let’s make this and back and forth where we can all share our stories.
My Promise To You
I promise to get to the point right off the bat. I’m not going to bury the lead in text-heavy paragraphs. When you subscribe, you’ll get something from me every day. I will be taking my previously published blog posts and reimagining them into short-form content that is easy to digest.
I also promise not to leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Short and sweet is what I promise.
Topics to Expect From Me
I’ve researched everything from dating over 50 to choosing the best lipstick color for over 60 women.
You can expect topics on:
Beauty (makeup for hooded eyes, best lipstick colors, powder foundation for over 60, etc.)
Gardening (specifically, how to propagate plants)
Relationships (online dating over 50, etc.)
Retirement (how to make friends after retirement)
Hobbies for people over 50
Wellness (best ellipticals, HIIT workouts for women over 50, etc.)
Of course, that’s just a short sampling of the topics you can expect in your newsletter.
