Have you tried wide-leg pants over 50? I’m 57 and just started wearing them. My honest opinion? They’re great! I thought they’d look weird on my petite (also known as “short”) frame, but they don’t at all.
That said, I'd like to share a few secrets about the trend with you.
Here’s one right off the bat: Invest in at least two high-quality pairs of pants. Cheap fabrics can cling in all the wrong places. The young ladies seem to be able to pull off less expensive clothing.
The over-50 crowd (I’m included in this) cannot.
Embrace the Fashion Trend! Wide-Leg Pants Over 50
Wide-leg jeans have become my go-to wardrobe staple. I always feel comfortable and confident wearing them.
Is it a bold choice? Maybe. But I don’t care. At my age, I do what I want. The following tips are designed to help you find the best wide-legged pants for your body.
Here are 5 tips on how to do just that:
1. Try Them On At Home
Do you dislike trying on jeans at the store? Me too! The lighting is usually weird, and it’s hard to get a sense of whether I’m going to be comfortable in them all day.
I suggest ordering a few different styles and trying them on in the comfort of your home. CAUTION: Read the return policy carefully first. Make sure you’re able to return the clothing either to the store directly or through the mail.
2. Balance with Proportional Tops
Wide-leg pants add volume to your lower half, so it’s important to balance them out with a more fitted top.
I don’t know about you, but I do not feel comfortable wearing crop tops. So that’s out. However, I nice alternative to balance those wide-legged jeans could include a cropped jacket.
3. High-Waisted Styles Work Best
A high-waisted pair of wide-leg pants is a great choice for women over 50.
Look for styles in a dark wash for a slimming effect, especially if you’re petite.
4. Look For “Forgiveness Jeans”
Okay, “forgiveness jeans” is a term I made up.
Make sure there’s a small amount of elastane in the material for a comfortable stretch in all the right places.
Jeans made of 1-5% elastane will give you enough stretch so that you don’t ever feel pinched at the waist when sitting, squatting, or bending over.
Look for these common blends for wearing wide-leg pants over 50:
Cotton + Elastane (Spandex/Lycra)
Cotton + Polyester + Elastane
Cotton + Rayon + Polyester + Elastane
5. Choose Jeans That Feel Good The Minute You Try Them On
The best wide-legged jeans are made from high-quality denim that offers structure without feeling too stiff.
If they don’t feel awesome on your body from the minute you put them on, forget about it. Try another pair.
We’re not getting any younger. And I don’t know about you, but I have zero patience for discomfort!
Here’s a pair of wide-legged jeans I like:
I try to ensure all of my clothes are machine washable like these. I love that they’re high-waisted, offer some stretch, and have flattering pockets and seams.
TIP: These jeans are regular-sized and are designed for a cropped fit. However, if you’re petite like me, the jeans will probably hit at the ankle (which I love!).
Do you have a favorite wide-legged jean brand?
I’m in love with Tribal jeans. They’re made with high-quality fabric, offer a slight stretch, and look amazing.
